Above-the-Fold is the part of a webpage visible without scrolling after the page loads. The area includes the first content, navigation, heading, supporting message and any call to action that appears within the visitor’s initial screen view. Key Takeaways About Above-the-Fold

  • Its boundary changes across screens and devices.
  • The opening view should establish relevance quickly.
  • It does not mean the entire page is visible.

How Above-the-Fold Works

Two coworkers talk at a desk while one uses a laptop and a monitor shows “ABOVE-THE-FOLD” with a rising chart

Above-the-Fold describes the opening area a visitor sees before scrolling. The browser creates that area from the screen dimensions, browser controls, zoom setting and page structure. A phone therefore shows a different opening view from a desktop monitor, even when both devices load the same URL.

Web teams plan this space around the visitor’s immediate task. A legal service page might place a clear heading, a short explanation and a relevant call to action near the top. The opening view does not need to contain every detail. Its role is to orient visitors and give them a clear reason to continue reading or take the next step.

Expert Note

When we review Above-the-Fold content, we inspect the page across common screen types and check whether the opening view matches the search intent. Our team also checks heading clarity, message order and the visibility of the intended action. We treat the first view as part of the wider conversion path, not as a separate design feature.

Above-the-Fold in Practice: A Real-World Example

A family law firm page may place a heading about separation advice, a brief explanation of the service and an enquiry button in the opening view. Supporting information about fees, process and legal issues can follow below the fold.
