What Is Duplicate Content?

Duplicate content is a search engine optimisation issue where substantially similar or identical text appears on more than one URL. The pages may belong to the same website or different websites. Search engines decide which version to show, index or treat as the primary result, so page signals can be divided across several URLs.

Key Takeaways About Duplicate content

  • Similarity matters more than whether pages use identical wording.
  • Several URLs can compete for the same search visibility.
  • Duplicate content is not automatically a penalty.

How Duplicate Content Works

Duplicate content occurs when search engines find matching or closely similar material at separate URLs. Common sources include printer-friendly pages, tracking parameters, copied practice-area descriptions and different URL versions of the same page. Search engines then assess which URL best represents the content.

Related glossary terms: Canonical tag, Noindex tag.

A canonical tag can identify the preferred URL when several versions serve a legitimate purpose. A noindex tag can keep a page out of search results when indexing it offers no value. Technical checks compare page text, titles, headings and URL patterns, while also considering internal links and site structure.

Expert Note

When we review a legal website, we compare similar URLs and inspect how templates, location pages and query parameters create repeated material. We then check canonical signals, internal links and indexation settings together, because one setting rarely explains the full search engine behaviour.

Duplicate content in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Sydney law firm may publish separate pages for family law in several suburbs using the same service description with only the suburb name changed. A technical SEO review would assess whether each page offers distinct local information or repeats the same content across URLs.
