What Are Impressions?

Impressions are the recorded instances when an advertisement appears on a search results page, website, or other digital placement. Each impression shows that an ad was displayed, but it does not show that someone read, clicked, or acted on the advertisement. Impressions measure visibility within a digital advertising campaign.

Local relevance: Sydney's dense inner suburbs and widely spread outer suburbs create different local search audiences, so location targeting can change where legal advertisements gain visibility.

Key Takeaways About Impressions

  • An impression records visibility, not engagement.
  • A high impression count does not confirm ad success.
  • Impressions are not the same as clicks or conversions.

How Impressions Works

Impressions are counted when an advertisement is served in an eligible placement. The advertising platform records the display, whether the viewer clicks the ad or leaves the page immediately. This measure describes reach within the selected audience, search terms, locations, and campaign settings.

In Google Ads, the impression count helps show how often a lawyer's advertisement entered an auction and appeared to a searcher. The figure gains meaning when reviewed beside click-through rate, clicks, enquiries, and conversions. A campaign may receive many impressions but few visits if the advert, search intent, or placement does not encourage further action.

Expert Note

When we review Impressions, we check where the advertisements appeared and which campaign settings shaped their visibility. We then compare the metric with search terms, clicks, and enquiry actions so reporting reflects useful exposure, not display volume alone.

Impressions in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Sydney family law firm runs a search campaign for separation advice. Impressions show how often its advertisement appeared for relevant searches, while clicks and enquiry actions show whether the exposure led to further engagement.
