What Is a Sitemap?

Sitemap is a file or page that lists the important URLs on a website and describes how those URLs relate. Search engines use an XML sitemap to discover pages that may be difficult to reach through links. An HTML sitemap presents a similar list for people who need another way to navigate a site.

Key Takeaways About Sitemap

  • An XML sitemap helps search engines discover listed URLs.
  • A sitemap does not guarantee crawling or indexing.
  • An XML sitemap is not the same as an HTML sitemap.

How Sitemap Works

Sitemap works by presenting website URLs in a structured format that search engines or visitors can read. An XML sitemap gives search engines a machine-readable list of pages, while an HTML sitemap gives people a navigational page. The listed URLs should represent pages that are available, useful and intended for discovery.

Search engines can find an XML sitemap through website settings, search engine tools or a reference in the site’s robots.txt file. A sitemap supports discovery, but search engines decide whether to crawl and index each URL. On a law firm website, the file may include practice area pages, location pages and useful legal guides, while excluding private or duplicate pages.

Expert Note

When we review a sitemap, we compare its listed URLs with the website’s live pages, indexation signals and internal links. We check that important legal service and location pages are represented, while excluded URLs have a clear technical reason. Our team also checks whether the sitemap remains accessible and reflects recent site changes.

Sitemap in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Sydney family law firm may have an XML sitemap listing its family law, divorce and parenting dispute pages. The sitemap can also include relevant Sydney location pages, provided those pages are distinct and available to visitors.
